Episode 26 – Phil Jagger – For What

Phil Jagger. Two words that spark fear and trepidation into the heart of the spoken word community. Come listen to the master. He gives the Raving Poets Band free rein to add whatever musical accompaniment they can to his stuff. And Phil, as always, rises up to the occasion.

This recording is particularly interesting. Phil asked for a predominant organ sound. So that’s Trofimuk that you hear grinding the organ. Now let’s add to that. Let’s add Mark Kozub re-entering the earth’s atmosphere at an insanely oblique angle. And let’s mash that together with some demanding beats and scratches off of the beat box and then humanize that with a sprinkle of synthesized drums from the world of Gord McRae. Few others would be brave enough to front such a concoction. Phil fronts it and makes it his own and puts together a standout performance.  This performance is not to be missed!

Episode 25 – Nicole Pakan – The Myth Of

Episode 14 of Live at the Kasbar featured a work by Rosemary Wilson called MRI.  It was inspired by her personal observations as she went to undergo an MRI.  It was haunting and chilling.   The piece and the performance are incredibly moving.  It was one of those moments at the Kasbar where you just want to hold your breath – because you’ve been changed in some small way.

Nicole Pakan was there on that day and heard Rosemary’s piece.  “The Myth Of” is in response to Rosemary’s piece.  On that night we were all glad that Nicole had put this together because she masterfully articulated what we all felt in our hearts and minds.

It’s a special “biblical reference” edition of the podcast this week.  Layne is quoting from Ecclesiastes today.  You’ll want to do some homework before you dive into this piece.

“Vanity of Vanities, saith the preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”. – Ecclesiastes 12:8.

Pull up a chair.  Get comfortable.  Stay awhile.  Listen to the word of Layne L’Heureux.

“Let’s walk.  Come.  I’ve seen the walls of Chinatown built upon opiate poppies /  littered with cinderblock two dollar heroin Laundromats …”

Today’s episode is brought to you by the letters “s”, “n” and oh and the number 5.

Mary oh Mary.  Walk along the tear.  Mary oh Mary. Walk if you dare!

A special “White” episode of Live at the Kasbar. Mary Pinkoski gently ponders the moment.  Trofimuk tinkles the ivories.  Together it yields magic.
